Engineering and agronomical solutions for protected ground greenhouses
About us
As a high-technology company, Raymond W Smith provides greenhouse complex design engineering, construction, and technological equipment.
The protected ground greenhouse complex is our area of specialization. It is our intention to provide both turnkey project implementation and modernization of existing operational facilities as part of our turnkey service.
A single-discipline agricultural technologists and engineers work for the company who have extensive experience implementing projects globally. As far as the greenhouse complex is concerned, we use the most advanced solutions with respect to local legal rules and climate conditions.
Turnkey greenhouses
It is almost impossible to imagine a greenhouse complex without an ecosystem. For greenhouse operations to be efficient, constant temperature and humidity conditions, special air compositions, and even the length of daylight hours must be met.
In order for greenhouses to function effectively, they require a combination of engineering and agricultural science solutions. Advanced agricultural businesses are striving to utilize their knowledge and expertise to gain a competitive edge. As a result, the requirements for contractors specializing in the design and construction of greenhouse complexes have become more stringent.
Furthermore, there is a growing interest among qualified prospects in turnkey solutions that cover every aspect of the project, from conception to completion. Raymond W Smith is prepared to offer expert support in all areas of implementing a turnkey greenhouse complex. This includes addressing internal logistics, ensuring energy efficiency, managing environmental concerns, and assessing the financial viability of the project.
Specialized aspects such as irrigation, automation, and internal transport are developed and integrated in close collaboration with trusted partners and suppliers. The specialists at Raymond W Smith possess the necessary skills and expertise to create and construct an ideal project that maximizes your investment.
Boiler rooms and power centers
Modern agricultural enterprises heavily rely on vegetable cultivation technology in protected environments. These greenhouses, however, are associated with industries that consume a significant amount of power. The constant maintenance of the greenhouse's microclimate and the need for supplementary lighting contribute to high energy consumption levels. With energy prices consistently rising, these expenses have a significant impact on production costs and overall profitability.
The calculation and control of maintenance expenditures after the greenhouse complex is operational play a crucial role in determining the project's financial indicators. Therefore, we place great emphasis on designing and selecting optimal solutions that minimize operational costs. Although energy-efficient solutions can be costly during implementation, they prove to be cost-effective in the long run. This not only involves choosing the right boiler and burner equipment but also considering the pipeline system.
One effective heating solution for the greenhouse complex is the two-pipe Tichelmann system. This system ensures uniform heating for single-story greenhouses and maximizes boiler efficiency. However, the two-pipe system requires twice as many pipes as single-pipe systems, often requiring larger diameter pipes, leading to additional costs. It is essential to calculate the financial viability of different options during the concept design stage to choose the most suitable solution that aligns with the project's goals and financial investments.
We provide both independent boiler room solutions and projects with heating from Central Heating and Power Plants. In some cases, it may be financially beneficial to implement a fully independent power center that can supply both heat and electricity to the complex. For agricultural enterprises, the production of cold may also be relevant for temperature regulation in vegetable storehouses. In such cases, we offer power centers based on trigeneration plants that can provide heat, electricity, and cold.
Ventilation systems
Ventilation is a crucial element of the greenhouse microclimate maintenance system. High temperatures and excessive humidity can significantly decrease crop yields, just like low temperatures or droughts. Therefore, it is essential to select the ventilation system early on, considering factors such as the greenhouse type, cultivated crop, and climatic zone. For instance, in extreme hot conditions, an additional forced exhaust system of ventilation and a cooling system can be considered.
Most greenhouses utilize a window ventilation system. The vents are arranged in a chessboard pattern on the roof, covering approximately 25% of the total roof area. The angle of the windows can be up to 50 degrees.
The ventilation control system can be automated, similar to other greenhouse systems.
Climate control
Climate control plays a crucial role in determining the yield indexes in greenhouse complexes. The microclimate in which vegetables develop and subsequently ripen is of extreme importance.
In this context, the microclimate refers to a specific level of carbon dioxide, temperature, humidity, and lighting. Plants absorb carbon dioxide from the air, which, combined with moisture, produces carbohydrates and oxygen. The plant utilizes a portion of the carbohydrates for energy and converts the rest into plant tissues.
The transpiration process also contributes to the optimization of plant metabolism. Leaf transpiration regulates water and nutrient absorption, as well as plant cooling. The intensity of transpiration is influenced by light, temperature, and humidity conditions.
By maintaining ideal climatic conditions for plants, agricultural technologists effectively control the plant development process. We offer comprehensive automated climate control solutions for greenhouse complexes, allowing for continuous monitoring and analysis of the microclimate. These solutions also enable automatic adjustment of heating, ventilation, and irrigation systems.
Modern climate control systems minimize the time and effort required by agronomists while reducing the impact of human factor.
